Cylinder

In bulk sampling, a "cylinder" can indicate various components used in certain types of sampling equipment. Here are two of the most common uses:

  1. Sampling cylinder: In some cases, the sample itself can be collected in a cylinder that is inserted into the bulk material. This "sampling cylinder" or "sampler" can be pressed into the material to take a sample and then pulled out again. The sample remains in the cylinder until it is taken out for analysis. This method is often used for bulk materials that are relatively loose and easy to penetrate, such as grain in a silo.
  2. Cylindrical sampling units: Automated sampling systems may use cylindrical units that move in and out of the bulk material to collect a sample. They could be pneumatically or hydraulically operated and would be moved by a cylinder that controls the retraction and extension. In this case, "cylinder" refers to the part of the sampling system that controls the movement of the sampling apparatus.

The exact meaning of "cylinder" in relation to bulk material sampling can vary from context to context, so it is always advisable to obtain accurate information in case of ambiguity.
